Deep Dive into Focus Styles

Hovering your mouse over a link or using your keyboard to select a button will look different visually depending on the website and browser you are using. These are called “focus styles” and are a commonly debated topic among accessibility experts.

Relying on browsers’ default focus styles won’t always meet WCAG requirements, especially with new requirements in WCAG 2.2. In this MeetUp, you’ll hear from WeCo’s Accessibility Team about what focus styles are, why they’re important, and designing brand-specific indicators that override browser defaults.

From the color and thickness of the outline that appears when an element receives focus, to making focus styles cross-browser compatible, and to styling focus styles for different element types, you’ll learn about different methods of making focus styles accessible to all users.
